Happy Bloomsday!

Happy Bloomsday! Behave yourselves. Although this is an excellent day for a first date.

  1. I'd rather be Stephen than Leopold. Bloom is a fascinating character, but he's got some icky personal habits. Especially on the beach.

Is Ulysses a great book? Yes, I say yes.

  2. So I've heard; I prefer the eminent "Curious George."

  3. I'm still waiting until I'm old enough to appreciate it. Do you think I'm there yet? What makes you love it?

  4. I love "Ulysses" because it's a good story, well told. The characters leap off the page, in all their confused and conflicted glory. Leopold Bloom, the protagonist, is unforgettable and in the end loveable despite his many flaws. Molly Bloom is priceless. I also greatly admire Joyce's way with the language, and his complete honesty about his characters and the society in which they live. Mostly, though, it's fun. It's great fun, and you can tell that Joyce was having fun while he wrote it, even in the deadly serious bits.

  5. Hmm. Perhaps one day I will read "Ulysses" for you and "Anna Karenina" for Davin.

  6. Scott, I like that Justus is reading for us. Is there anything else we can make him do? He seems pretty tech savvy.

I've not read much of Joyce. Just some short stories which I remember liking, though I don't remember what they were about. I really wanted to get through Finnegan's Wake, but alas...

  7. Davin: I plan to have Justus tune up my car next week! I'll give you his phone number in case you need your bathroom cleaned or something.
