Free Story Idea

So I had this idea for a story that's the sort of book I'll never write. I think it would be perfect for someone like Jasper Fforde, but as I don't know him and he seems to have plenty enough ideas on his own, I'll offer it up here. Anyway: a sleep shortage, with some evil corporation siphoning it off and selling it or making something evil out of it, or putting it into the water supply so we're all sort of half-asleep all the time and more prone to buy evil corporation's products on the Shopping Network. Sounds allegorical if you ask me. Anyway. Something. Anyway.

  1. It sort of sounds like "Monsters Inc." but not.

  2. I don't know "Monsters Inc." but I'm willing to bet I stole this idea from somewhere. All of my ideas come from classical mythology or Aesop or European fairy tales. I put different hats on the characters and call the stories my own, just like Shakespeare.

  3. Even if you have no children you should see it. It's not classical mythology by any means, nor European fairy tale but it's cute.

It's about a bunch of monsters who make children scream and the corporation the monsters work for then use the screams to power their planet. And what happnes when a human child gets on their planet by accident. Pixar, I think.

Actually, it might have been stolen from a European fairy tale somewhere. Shades of Brothers Grimm maybe.

  4. This reminds me of a fairy tale I wanted to write about a little man that goes around at night to redistribute pounds from one person to another.

  5. Maybe this is because you're sleep deprived more often than you should be. Sounds like a cool story.

  6. This does sound like Monsters, Inc. I watch too much Pixar, let me tell you. Thing is, they always write good stories. But I think yours could be made to be really unique. I might steal, maybe not. :)

  7. Big D and Ivana: See my Lit Lab post for next Friday. If you've got anything, add it to the post.

Lois: That's too true. I'm always sleepy. In my last book, the protagonist is always sleepy and hungry because I tended to write very late at night and forgot to eat dinner.

Anne: I'll see if Mighty Reader wants to watch some Pixar!

  9. Monster's Inc. isn't where my mind went when I read the post, but I can see how people's minds might go there.

Glamis, Pixar does make good movies with great stories. I feel compelled to say that it's not possible to watch too much Pixar.

The story sounds like a good idea, though.
